ADD SPACE TO YOUR HOME IN 3 SIMPLE STEPS

Updated: Aug 17, 2020

If your brood is growing rapidly, you might think that your only option is to move onto pastures new. However, you don’t have to list your home and go through the stress of finding a new family pad. Instead, you could add space to your current humble abode. Our homes are more than just bricks and mortar. They are buildings that we grow emotionally attached to and that we want to keep hold of because of all the happy memories we create there. Take a look at these three simple ways you can stay put without forfeiting your need for space.

Go Up

For some people, the easiest option is to extend upwards. If your loft has enough height, a simple attic conversion can be carried out. This can give you more bedroom space along with an extra bathroom. Adding space in this way is simple as you won’t need planning permission as you aren’t extending the footprint of your home. Internally you can do pretty much as you please as long as you adhere to building regulations. You can add a skylight or two to increase the amount of light flooding your new room. Insulate well and create a decent staircase up to your new rooms. Without this, you might not be able to list your new living space as a room. An extra bedroom or two can be perfect for the impending patter of tiny feet.

Go Down

If your loft isn’t a suitable conversion spot in your house, consider going down. If you have a basement, the chances are that you have the roof height needed to create an extra room. In the basement, you can be more flexible with your choice of living space. Perhaps you want a large playroom for the kids. Maybe, you’d rather convert the basement into a luxury kitchen diner. Or maybe, you’d rather utilize your basement for a gym, a games room or a man cave. Ensure that you utilize some basement waterproofing as these areas of our homes tend to be single skinned walls. This will prevent damp seeping in and will keep your new room warm and safe.

Go Out

If you are more inclined to extend your downstairs living space, the only option may be to go outwards. Apply for planning permission and get some architects in to plan out your extended kitchen or living space. As your brood grows, the chances are that you want more space to enjoy one another’s company. A poky kitchen and a small living room means that this can be difficult. A larger open plan space facilitated by an extension means you can watch a movie together in comfort, eat meals together without feeling cramped and you can have some quality family time together whenever you choose.

You don’t always have to move house in order to achieve more space. Adding square footage to your home can be a more financially astute decision as you won’t have the costs of moving but you will be outperforming the housing market in your local area by increasing the size of your property. Choose good tradespeople, stick to a budget and watch your family home become even more perfect than before.
