3 Ways to Get Instantly Healthier in 2020

Updated: Aug 17, 2020

We all want to be healthy and live our best lives but it’s not easy. It sometimes feels like society has all the odds stacked against us with its easy access to fast foods, continuous release of addictive TV shows and the increasing expense of ‘healthy living’.

Being healthy has a never-ending list of benefits to our physical, mental and emotional well being. Unfortunately, our modern busy lives are demanding and short on spare time so leading a healthy lifestyle for most of us is just not practical.

Thankfully, there are some small, simple but highly effective changes you can make in your life right now to instantly start living healthier. They won’t cost you a fortune or take up much of your time either.

1. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

We all need to stay active to keep our bodies working optimally. This requires getting out, exercising, sweating, increasing your heartbeat and working hard. However, not all of us have the time for the gym, classes or sports, nor can we afford them.

HIIT training avoids all these barriers. You don’t need any equipment, it doesn’t cost anything and will only take up 15-20 minutes of your day. The aim of HIIT is to work in intervals completing lots of different high-intensity exercises in a short time. The result of this can help you dramatically lose weight, strengthen muscles and improve flexibility all at once.

You can find HIIT workouts on YouTube or fitness websites, you don’t have to pay for them and you can do it at home in your underwear (if you want to). HIIT offers the chance to keep fit and healthy despite your busy lifestyle.

2. Eat Whole Foods

Whole foods are natural foods that are not highly processed, contain no preservatives, colorings, chemicals or any other unnatural ingredients. We have all become far too accustomed to the convenience and ease of processed fast foods. Even foods we think aren’t fast foods are still highly processed in factories. These foods are usually high in sugar, salt and fat causing us to gain weight.

This year, a simple way to be healthier try to eat an 80-90% whole foods diet. This means eating fresh foods including organic meat, seafood, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and fruits. Eating a majority whole foods diet has shown to improve blood sugar levels, digestion, give you more energy, less muscle pain, make you happier and improve your microbiome (gut health). In fact, you can now get macrobiotics cooking courses that specifically help improve gut health, something that scientists are revealing as a lot more important for overall health than we previously thought.

3. Meditate

Scientists are now discovering what some people have known for millennia, that meditation has huge health benefits. The simple act of sitting down, legs crossed and in silence can help reduce stress, control anxiety, promote emotional health, helps self-reflect, lengthens attention span, reduces memory loss and can help fight addictions.

Meditation is still widely misunderstood. It is not about ‘not thinking’, it is the practice of bringing your thoughts back to nothing every time your brain wants to wander off. You are training your brain to be more present. The goal doesn’t have to be enlightenment or even anything spiritual whatsoever. It’s simply taking time to properly ease your mind in what is otherwise and very hectic modern lifestyle.

Meditation requires nothing but a pillow and 5-10 minutes of your time each day.
